Federal Disaster Declaration Fact Sheet

On April 28, 2011, President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the State of Alabama, triggering the release of Federal funds to help individuals and communities recover from the Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding, beginning April 15, 2011, and continuing.

Details of the disaster declaration and assistance programs are as follows:

Individual Assistance

Individual Assistance can include temporary housing assistance for eligible applicants such as rental assistance and repair assistance. Residents of Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Marshall, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Sumter, and Marengo Counties are eligible for Individual Assistance and are encouraged to register with FEMA.

Internet: You may apply for disaster assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.

Smartphone: The mobile website m.fema.govallows the public to easily accessdisaster-related information directly on their smartphone. The site also includes a registration form that the public can fill out to apply for disaster assistance after a Presidential declaration.

FEMA's Individuals and Households Program Guide: FEMA's Help After a Disaster Guide is mailed to FEMA applicants and provides an overview of FEMA's Individuals and Households Program. It is available in PDF and Text formats and is translated into several languages.

Public Assistance

Public Assistance is assistance for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities. All 67 counties in the State of Alabama for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program.

Hazard Mitigation

Hazard Mitigation is assistance for actions taken to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural hazards. All counties in the State of Alabama are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the State and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
