Fed: Another 7,000 farmers get drought help

Almost 7,000 Victorian farmers have qualified for drought assistance after a rulingby federal Agriculture Minister WARREN TRUSS.

Farmers in 31 drought-affected shires and four regional centres in Victoria's Wimmera, north east, central and central east regions will be able to gain assistance.

Mr TRUSS says he was satisfied a prima facie case had been found for the areas to gainExceptional Circumstances assistance.

A prima facie declaration enables farmers to receive welfare for six months and interestrate subsidies for two years on loans up to two years.

The National Rural Advisory Council will now examine the areas to see if they qualifyfor full Exceptional Circumstances declarations, which would increase welfare assistanceto two years.

It brings to more than 15,000 the number of farmers now able to claim federal welfare.
